about

ScapeGoat is a collection of songs that I began working on towards the end of 2017. Around this time, I had become burnt out on writing and recording songs for other artists. It wasn't until the beginning of 2018 that I decided to finish these songs using my own lyrics and vocals.

As much as I love working on hip hop music, beatmaking was no longer satisfying to me. I had to go back to my roots and remember the deep tradition of rock n roll music that I come from. I wanted to make a record that was a complete reaction against the "looped" records I had made in the past without ignoring the things I had learned from using those methods.

I made this record from my living room: recording all the guitar, bass, keys, and extra production. I would wake up at ungodly hours of the morning and begin tracking. After I had solid demos, I realized that my "meat and potatoes" drumming wasn't the best option for the songs.

I acquired the help of my friend Whitney Sellers, who is an extremely talented drummer, to record the drums on tracks 1-4 and 7-9. I sent her demo versions of the songs with my drumming and she would add her own flavor to each track. After this, she sent the tracks back to me for my own mixing and mastering.

As a child, I was always encouraged to sing, but it is the point of musicianship that I have always been the most afraid of. As a producer, I was doing what was comfortable behind a computer while coaching other artists. I needed to get away from this mentality for my own sake. All of the vocal production was done at night...in hopes that no one would just happen to stop by and consequently hear me. (Since then, I've grown much more comfortable with my voice.)

Lyrically, the songs are all over the place. I wrote on themes of depression, guilt, outrage, mental illness, and our strange tendency to hate total strangers from behind a cell phone. I chose ScapeGoat as the song to title the album because it deals with the majority of these issues in two verses.

The Human Element is where all of my musical ambition, lyrical concepts, and insecurities coalesce. I finally have a project that I am comfortable working with for many years to come.

Since this discovery, I have put a band together to help bring my vision to life in a live setting. This first project is simply a Preface to a very long Book. I hope you enjoy what you hear. I also hope you will support us by purchasing this record and coming to a show.

Either way, thank you for any gesture of support.

God bless,

Tyler Suggs
